Niger Under the Threat of Climate Change: A Friend’s Voice and Our Small Contribution

Recently, I received a message from a friend living in Niger. When I saw the photos they sent, my heart ached. The images showed people who had lost their homes due to floods caused by climate change, villages submerged in water, and faces that seemed to have lost hope.

This year’s rainy season has been particularly devastating for the people of Niger. Floods, exacerbated by climate change, have swept across the country, forcing many families from their homes and destroying the foundations of their daily lives. The impact on livelihoods and food security is severe, leaving many people at a loss. Furthermore, the increased risk of waterborne diseases like cholera due to the flooding has raised concerns about further health crises.

There is only so much we can do. However, we hope to help by delivering lanterns and chargers that we have stored locally to the disaster-stricken areas. Living in darkness without electricity amplifies anxiety and fear. If we can provide light even for a little while, perhaps it can serve as a ray of hope in the midst of this darkness.

Climate change is gradually impacting our lives as well, but in places like Niger, its effects are already devastating. Knowing these realities, reflecting on what we can do, and taking action are crucial.

I hope more people become aware of this situation. Perhaps if each of us takes some action, we can bring about some change, however small.
